What is the difference between shuttle looms, rapier looms, water jet looms, and air jet looms?

The essential differences between the four types of looms lie in their weft insertion methods and production philosophies. Choosing the wrong model could wipe out your entire investment.

1. Shuttle Loom (Old Tank)

Weft Insertion: The shuttle loads the weft yarn and collides back and forth (like a cannonball).
Unique Technique: When weaving heavyweight denim/canvas, the shuttle's inertia pounding the fabric, creating a dense, steel-like texture.
Fatal Weakness: Deafening noise (120 decibels) and energy consumption (the main motor is equivalent to two water jet looms).
On the verge of obsolescence: Only found in renovated old factories, new factories avoid them.

2. Rapier Loom (All-rounder)

Weft Insertion: The shuttle interposes a rigid/flexible rod (with yarn clamped and transferred by a robotic arm).
Unique Technique: When weaving complex jacquard fabrics, the two rapiers coordinate with the precision of embroidery (exclusively for luxury Italian fabrics).
Vulnerability: Its structure is as complex as a clock, requiring a master of calculus to fine-tune the machine.

3. Water Jet Loom (Chemical Fiber Cheetah)

Weft Insertion: High-pressure water jets carry yarn (like a fire hose)
Unique Technique: When weaving ultra-fine nylon, the water flow is as gentle as a feather (0.1mm nozzle doesn't damage the yarn)
Weakness: The workshop is filled with mist, creating a high risk of electrical leakage (security workers wearing rubber shoes are in a minefield).

4. Air Jet Loom (The All-Round Fighter)

Weft Insertion: Compressed air blows the weft yarn (similar to a paint spray gun)
Unique Technique: When weaving high-count cotton terry cloth, the airflow lifts the terry loops for a fluffy and even texture.
Achilles' Heel: The air compressor consumes a lot of electricity (accounting for 50% of the factory's electricity bill)

Four looms in one room:

Aspect Shuttle Loom Rapier Loom Water Jet Loom Air Jet Loom
Weft Carrier Metal shuttle + bobbin Alloy/steel band rapiers Pressurized softened water Compressed air
Fiber Suitability All fibers (esp. coarse yarns) All fibers (esp. delicate yarns) Hydrophobic synthetics only All fibers (best for hydrophilic)
Fabric Character Heavy & dense Complex patterns & textures Lightweight & smooth Fluffy & soft
Workshop Disasters Shuttles eject like cannonballs Rapier jams → snaps warp threads Pump seals burst → flooded trenches Air hoses explode → cotton snowstorms
Maintenance Rituals Douse gears in engine oil Adjust rails with feeler gauges Unclog nozzles with guitar string Scale roofs to patch compressors
